// Staff Benda Bilili
Staff Benda Bilili, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, are street musicians from Kinshasa, many of them disabled by polio. With four singer/guitarists at the core, the group play Congolese rumba with a funky energy, accompanied by a one-string home-made guitar invented by band-member Roger Landau. In Lingala, ‘Benda Billi’ means ‘look beyond appearances’ and this band of extraordinary individuals confound any expectations. Their lyrics are about life in Kinshasa, the problems that disability, brutal poverty, social breakdown and war bring. But they are also messages of hope and resilience, and the group is well known in their home town for championing the dispossessed. Their acclaimed debut album Très Très Fort produced by Vincent Kenis, was released in 2009, the same year the band embarked on a series of European tours and also won the Womex Artist Award. // VIDEOS
